Unisex perfumery: can you wear 'men's' and 'women's' fragrances?

Founded in 1828 by Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, the House of Guerlain has been synonymous with elegance, innovation, and impeccable taste for nearly two centuries. Starting with a small boutique on Rue de Rivoli in Paris, which sold perfumed soap, Guerlain quickly won the favor of the aristocracy and royal courts of Europe. In 1853, the creation of Eau de Cologne Impériale for Empress Eugénie earned him the title of Official Perfumer to Her Majesty, marking the starting point in the brand's history as a purveyor of luxury.
The uniqueness of Guerlain lies in the fact that for 166 years, until 1994, the brand was managed exclusively by descendants of the founder. Each generation of the Guerlain family contributed to the art of perfumery. The founder's grandson, Jacques Guerlain, created immortal masterpieces: the melancholic L'Heure Bleue, the mysterious Mitsouko, and the passionate Shalimar — the world's first oriental fragrance, inspired by the legend of Emperor Shah Jahan's love for Mumtaz Mahal. And his uncle, Aimé Guerlain, as early as 1889, challenged traditions by releasing Jicky — one of the first perfumes where natural and synthetic components were harmoniously combined, opening a new era in perfumery.
Interestingly, the bee, which later became the brand's signature symbol, first appeared on the bottle of Eau de Cologne Impériale, gifted to the empress. Guerlain also made history as the inventor of the first lipstick in a stick in the 1870s.
Guerlain's DNA is respect for heritage, courage in experiments, and uncompromising quality of ingredients. The brand owns its own plantations in Grasse, where it cultivates rose, jasmine, and other flowers for its compositions. After the era of the Guerlain family, the baton was taken up by outstanding modern "noses." Since 2008, the house's chief perfumer has been Thierry Wasser, who carefully preserves the archive of formulas and creates new hits. The brand's fragrances have also been crafted by stars of the perfumery world: Francis Kurkdjian, Christine Nagel, Olivier Polge, and Maurice Roucel.
The Guerlain catalog impresses with its diversity: from affordable fresh waters to exclusive works of art. The beloved collection of many, Aqua Allegoria, offers light, sunny fragrances inspired by nature, such as Mandarine Basilic or Herba Fresca. The playful and seductive La Petite Robe Noire is a hymn to femininity with berry-vanilla chords. For connoisseurs of high perfumery, the boutique lines Les Absolus d'Orient and L'Art et la Matière are intended, where rare and precious materials are used.
Acquaintance with Guerlain logically begins with its icons. Shalimar with its warm vanilla-amber trail is the benchmark of the oriental direction. The floral-aldehyde Insolence captivates with its bold cheerfulness. The delicate and romantic fleur-d'oriental Idylle, created by Thierry Wasser, has become a modern classic. And Mon Guerlain, inspired by the images of Angelina Jolie, embodies the strength and sensuality of the modern woman.
One cannot overlook the eternally youthful, playful character of La Petite Robe Noire or the refreshing carefreeness of the fragrances from Aqua Allegoria, such as Coconut Fizz.
Guerlain perfumes are renowned for their exceptional longevity and recognizable sillage, especially in oriental and amber compositions. Reviews often note that the house's fragrances have depth and complexity that gradually unfold throughout the day. They are rarely intrusive but always leave a trace. Many compositions, like Shalimar or Mitsouko, are considered timeless and suitable for special occasions, while fresh Aqua Allegoria or playful versions of La Petite Robe Noire are ideal for everyday wear and summer season.
When buying iconic perfumes, it's important to be sure of their authenticity. Pay attention to details: high-quality packaging made of thick cardboard with clear printing, the presence of batch codes on the box and bottle. On original bottles, especially in luxury lines, the brand's signature symbol — the golden bee — is often found, cast with jewel-like precision. Caps should fit tightly, and the sprayer should work softly and silently. It's better to purchase fragrances in official boutiques, from authorized retailers, or on trusted online platforms.
