Scent as part of identity: finding your perfume signature
There are people we recognize before we see them. They are still in the hallway, but their familiar ...
Gérald Guillen is not just a perfumer, but a true storyteller whose stories are written in scents. As the founder and heart of niche houses Histoires de Parfums and The Scent of Departure, he has turned perfume creation into a high art, where each composition is a portrait, a journey, or an emotion. His path to the world of perfumery is unique: born in 1964 in Orleans and raised in colorful Morocco, he first became a successful restaurateur in Paris. However, a passion for fragrances, awakened after a visit to Grasse, led him to the prestigious ISIPCA school, and in 2000, his life changed forever.
Gérald Guillemin's signature style is a narrative approach. Each of his fragrances for Histoires de Parfums is an immersion into the destiny of a legendary personality. He brings the spirit of Casanova to life in the spicy aniseed 1725 Casanova, the bohemian boldness of George Sand in the woody musk 1804 George Sand, and the charisma of Hemingway in the spicy citrus 1899 Hemingway. But his talent is not limited to biographies. He creates olfactory odes to entire eras, as in the sensual 1969, or to iconic places, recreating the atmosphere of the Moulin Rouge in the seductive 1889 Moulin Rouge.
The master's portfolio includes compositions that have become true icons of niche perfumery. Lovers of rich, deep accords adore the velvety Ambre 114 and the bold, almost gothic 1740 Marquis de Sade. Floral themes unfold in his work from unexpected angles: from the transparent violet in Blanc Violette to the lush greenery of peony in Vert Pivoine. His fragrances for operas, such as the passionate 1875 Carmen Bizet or the mysterious 1926 Turandot Puccini, prove that music can not only be heard, but also felt.
Guillen's second global project, The Scent of Departure, fully reveals his love of travel and his ability to capture the aura of a place. Each bottle is styled like a luggage tag, and the composition is an olfactory map of the city. This project highlights his innovation and desire to go beyond traditional forms, turning perfume into a personal, intimate souvenir.
Even as a recognized master, Gérald Guillen continues to develop. Most recently, in 2023, he presented a new capsule collection, Raw Materials, for Histoires de Parfums, exploring the beauty of key ingredients in their purest form, with a sequel expected in 2024. Interestingly, his creative energy finds expression not only in the laboratory: he is passionate about restoring classic cars and is even considering creating a fragrance for the world of electric cars. This versatility makes him a figure who continuously inspires the industry.
