In 2009, Shiseido introduced Zen Summer — a fragrance that's hard to forget. By character, a feminine fragrance drawing from the floral and fruit families. A fragrance from the Zen collection, in eau de parfum.

Description of the composition

The composition of Zen Summer unfolds as an expressive line of development, where notes flow without rush and without gaps. The creative approach of Shiseido is recognizable in details that define the fragrance identity. No excess details, only what works, and the structure feels complete all the way through. Eau de parfum sets the right density and pace of development.

The accord architecture is driven by these accords: Citrus, Floral, Fruit and Musc without random overlap. Additional accords such as Wood and Amber add depth to the backdrop. The stylistic positioning is feminine, which makes the scent profile easier to read. For persistence Low points to a sustained drydown presence.

At the opening of the pyramid you sense vibrant berry first notes: Apple, Blackcurrant, Grapefruit and Lemon.

In the central layer you notice Freesia, Gardenia, Lily of the Valley, Lotus and Rose holding a opulent floral direction.

From the group perspective the composition is built around Fruit, Citrus, Floral and Whiteflower. The palette also extends to Ambery, Wood and Musk.

In summary Zen Summer reads as a cohesive composition — the opening sets direction, the central phase adds depth, and the final phase leaves a stable imprint. These are the fragrances best understood in wear.

Sweet fruits with citruses that practically jump into your nose immediately make it clear that something powerful is hiding in the bottle. Gardenia is front and center here, and peaches aren't far behind. This fragrance, in my opinion, looks quite elegant, even too much so, as if it's trying to make an impression.

The scent is kind of detached, cold, and pretentious. It's not the confidence of a mature woman, but rather the clumsy attempts of some young thing trying to get attention. Lilies of the valley, yes, beautiful, but the musk and peaches somehow don't fit. It definitely feels like there's too much synthetic stuff here 😒

The fragrance is really beautiful, it resembles modern "compotes" but still maintains an Asian restraint, although it does have brightness. Raspberry and citrus create a sour-tart effect, and a slight wateriness and translucent floral notes add interest. It sounds like a watercolor, but with such a resonant tint. Among all the flankers, this one is probably one of the most successful 👍

The fragrance turned out quite cold, although fruity notes supposedly should have dominated. It's sweet, but at the same time restrained. This is precisely what makes it suitable for daytime use - it smells pleasant, but doesn't allow you to fully relax and drown in emotions. It feels like it keeps you afloat, but doesn't let you fully enjoy the moment 😔
