Quality control in perfumery: how fragrances are tested
We are used to thinking of perfume as pure art: the perfumer's inspiration, a beautiful story, a bot...
Le Labo launched Oud 27 in 2009 — and it was a brilliant move. By character, a unisex fragrance drawing from the east and wood families. Perfumers Fabrice Penot and Vincent Schaller joined forces to create something truly special. Concentration — eau de parfum: exactly what it needs to be.
It has a very delicate sillage, staying close and personal. The longevity of this fragrance is moderate — exactly what most occasions call for. Brand country — the United States, with its deep-rooted relationship with the fragrance industry. Oud 27 Le Labo — the choice of those who appreciate depth and character in every detail.
The fragrance has medium longevity and lasts on the skin for about 5-6 hours, gradually revealing its notes and leaving a pleasant impression
The scent exists only for you—no one around you will notice it
The perfume has a rich aroma that will help you stand out from the crowd and create a memorable image
A rich and elegant fragrance that gently unfolds on the skin and lasts most of the day, leaving a delicate trail
Perfumes for the fall and winter seasons often contain notes of vanilla, spices, ambergris, wood, and other warm accords, creating a feeling of comfort and warmth during the cold months
The olfactory structure of Oud 27 unfolds as a layered story, where notes flow with precision and warmth. The style of Le Labo is evident in the pacing of the notes and the overall aesthetic. Nothing here feels random, and the composition keeps a clear direction. Eau de parfum emphasizes the depth and body this composition needs.
When the structure is mixed the fragrance opens as a single chord with a soft-dry woody mood: Aldehydes, Ambergris, Civet, Grey Ambergris, Oud, Patchouli and Rose. In this case 7 notes sound as one integrated frame, building a sense of noble depth that feels seamless.
The middle and base stages are perceived as a gradual shift without abrupt breaks, which gives the structure continuity.
The stylistic positioning is unisex, which makes the scent profile easier to read. In longevity terms Middle points to a sustained drydown presence.
At the note-group layer the composition is built around Fairy, Ambery, Animals and Wood. The palette also extends to Floral, Musk and Gourmet. At family level the scent maps to East and Wood.
Taken together Oud 27 reads as a cohesive composition — the start forms character, the heart develops the core line, and the final phase leaves a stable imprint. These are the fragrances best understood on skin.

At the same time, the base of the fragrance is woody, created using soft cedar and smoky vetiver.
I detect light notes of frankincense resinoid or another balsamic component, which, together with cashmeran and isobutylquinoline, gives the fragrance order and a clear leathery-woody character. The woody density is slightly diluted by floral accents of rose and jasmine, which deepen the animalic accord and add new nuances.
The animalic accord appears immediately, it's bright and sharp, even shocking for an unprepared nose, but its intensity subsides towards the end. The manufacturer mentions civet, but I perceive more castoreum with its characteristic gouache smell and indole. The animalic part sounds unnatural: it's quite chemical and even pungent, as if intentionally highlighted. Oud 27 looks provocative, as if created to surprise. If you work with people, it's better not to wear it to work. Such fragrances are more suitable for solitude or for communicating with those who share your passion for dirty and sharp smells
