How to apply perfume to clothes and hair without stains and damage
Scent lasts longer on clothing and hair and sounds more voluminous than on bare skin. But this beaut...
The French niche perfumery house Etat Libre d'Orange, founded in 2006 by creative visionary Etienne de Swardt, has positioned itself from the very beginning as a bold revolutionary in the world of scents. Its name, which translates to "Free Orange State," is a tribute to the historical region in South Africa where the founder's father came from, and at the same time, a manifesto of complete creative freedom.
The brand's philosophy is based on principles of absolute independence from marketing trends and bold artistic expression. The motto "Parfum est mort! Vive le parfum!" ("Perfume is dead! Long live perfume!") reflects de Swardt's desire to bury outdated canons and create a new, living perfumery that speaks the language of art, not commerce.
From the start, Etat Libre d'Orange challenged public taste by exploring themes considered taboo: sex, corporeality, human vices, and social conventions. Early works, such as Jasmin Et Cigarette with its unexpected duo of flower and tobacco smoke, showed that perfumery could be an intellectual provocation.
The pinnacle of this provocation was the fragrance Secretions Magnifiques, dedicated to bodily fluids. It shocked the public and critics, forever inscribing the brand's name in history as the creator of one of the most scandalous perfumes in the world. However, behind the shock always lay a deep concept and the virtuoso work of perfumers.
Over time, the brand, while preserving its identity, became more refined and began collaborating with bright personalities from the art world. Thus appeared perfumes created together with actress and muse Rossy de Palma (Eau De Protection Rossy De Palma), Oscar-winning Tilda Swinton (Tilda Swinton Like This), as well as a fragrance inspired by the Marquis de Sade.
In 2018, Etat Libre d'Orange surprised the world again by releasing the fragrance I Am Trash — Les Fleurs du Déchet, created from recycled waste from perfume production, making a bold statement about sustainability in the luxury industry.
Today, the hallmark of the house and its bestsellers remain those early, now cult, creations. The iconic fragrance Putain Des Palaces with its leathery and powdery accents, the gourmand and cozy Noel Au Balcon, the sensual and mysterious Archives 69, or the ironic Fat Electrician — each tells a unique story and finds its devoted fan.
No less beloved by fans are other hits: the touching Divin'Enfant, the floral-fruity Charogne, as well as the provocative Secretions Magnifiques, which, despite its scandalous reputation, has its admirers.
Behind these works stand outstanding "noses" of modern perfumery. The brand has collaborated with masters such as Quentin Bisch, who conceived several hits; Christine Nagel, now the chief perfumer at Jo Malone; provocateur Antoine Lie; the talented Daniela Roche-Andrier and many others. This constellation of talents ensured the incredible olfactory diversity of the brand's portfolio.
Although Etat Libre d'Orange does not strive for strict division into lines, one collection is worth noting particularly — Orange Extraordinaire. It is dedicated to the queen of citrus — the orange, and reveals this note in the most unexpected and beautiful facets.
The brand has a physical embodiment of its philosophy — a conceptual boutique in Paris at 69 rue des Archives. It is here, in this space, that many ideas are born, and the house number is even immortalized in the name of the fragrance Archives 69.
Interestingly, many of the brand's fragrances, despite their niche status, have gained cult recognition and regularly top the lists of perfume lovers worldwide, and discussions about them on forums never cease.
Etat Libre d'Orange is more than a perfumery house. It is an intellectual project, an artistic manifesto, and a community of like-minded individuals who value courage, irony, and depth in perfumery. It continues to prove that perfume can be the most radical and personal form of art.
