Scents of eras: how perfume reflects the spirit of the times
Every era has its own scent. Not literally, but in how it felt: what it wanted, what it feared, what...
Frank Fölkl is a name synonymous with success in the world of modern fragrances. As the leading perfumer at giant Firmenich, he is behind some of the most talked-about and best-selling perfumes of the last two decades, skillfully balancing niche exclusivity with mass appeal.
Born in Germany and spending his youth in France, Fölkl had a keen sensitivity to smells from childhood. His fascination with perfumery began with collecting commercial fragrances, which later led him to the prestigious ISIPCA school, a breeding ground for perfumery talent. This unique cultural background would later form the basis of his universal approach.
Fölkl's career began at the New York office of Symrise, and his debut works in the early 2000s immediately attracted attention. He created fragrances for fashion houses such as Anna Sui and Kenneth Cole, but the real milestones were Guerlain - Precious Heart and Dior - I Love Dior, which proved his ability to work with legendary brands. In 2005, his move to Firmenich opened a new chapter.
His collaboration with niche brand Le Labo was a turning point. Starting with the intellectual Iris 39, Fölkl gave the world iconic fragrances. The city collection, including Limette 37 San Francisco and Musc 25 Los Angeles, showcased his talent for creating atmospheres. However, it was Santal 33, with its hypnotic cedar-leather accord, that became a cultural phenomenon and the perfumer's calling card, forever changing the landscape of niche perfumery.
Falkl is a master of dialogue between different worlds. He effortlessly created seductive fragrances for Victoria's Secret and Avon (such as the provocative Ultra Sexy), worked on elegant compositions for Hugo Boss and Dolce & Gabbana, and brought his magic to brands such as Zara and Oriflame. His signature style is recognizable in the floral Daisy Delight for Marc Jacobs and the exquisite Esprit d'Oscar.
Frank Fökl's style is a blend of German precision and French sensuality. He masterfully works with accords of leather, sandalwood, and musk, giving them a modern, sometimes almost minimalist, presentation. The perfumer loves to play with contrasts, combining transparent citrus notes with deep woody or powdery iris accents, as in Thé Noir 29. His fragrances are often described as "intelligent" — they engage in dialogue, demand attention, and leave a lasting impression.
Working from Firmenich's New York studio, the perfumer continues to set trends. He captured the demand for personalization by creating the iconic Glossier You, a fragrance that reflects the wearer's skin. His collaborations with celebrities, from Christina Aguilera to Ariana Grande, demonstrate his ability to speak the language of pop culture. And works such as the exquisite Roses on Ice for By Kilian prove his inexhaustible creativity.
Frank Wölkl is not just a perfume creator, but a true architect of contemporary perfume tastes. From affordable fragrances for Avon to the iconic Santal 33, his work brings together millions of people around the world. His story is proof that true talent can blur the lines between niche and mass market, creating fragrances that become part of everyone's personal history.
