Thé Noir 29: A Fragrance with History

Released in 2015, Thé Noir 29 by Le Labo quickly won the hearts of niche perfume lovers.

In Russia, it is known as 'Black Tea 29', which reflects its central theme – deep and aromatic black tea, woven into a complex composition.

The brand Le Labo, founded in 2006 by Eddie Roschi and Fabrice Penot, brought a laboratory approach to fragrance creation to the market, where each eau de parfum is made individually.

Thé Noir 29 embodies this philosophy, offering a unique and personalized experience that stands out from mass-market perfumes.

Positioning as Unisex

This fragrance is positioned as unisex, making it ideal for men and women seeking complex and neutral perfumes.

Its sillage is low, creating an intimate aura that doesn't impose itself but softly accompanies you throughout the day.

As an eau de parfum, Thé Noir 29 has sufficient longevity for daily wear, suitable for the office, dates, or evening outings.

Its fougère base from the fougère family adds classic elegance with a modern twist, making it a versatile choice for different situations.

Creators: Voices Behind the Perfume

The creation of Thé Noir 29 involved two talented perfumers: Fabrice Penot and Frank Voelkl.

Their collaboration led to the birth of a fragrance that combines Le Labo's innovation with traditional techniques, creating a balance between experimental and accessible.

This perfume has strengthened Le Labo's reputation as a brand that is not afraid to experiment with unusual chords, such as tea and tobacco, while remaining within the realm of exquisite perfumery, attracting both newcomers and seasoned connoisseurs.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

At first, it feels like opening a can of black tea, and the aroma immediately fills the space, slightly spiced with tobacco notes. The tea scent is very distinct, it's really interesting. Longevity is good, sillage is moderate. I didn't notice any transformations, it remains the same as at the beginning - fresh loose-leaf tea from a can. Perhaps it just becomes a bit warmer and less intrusive over time. Overall, there's a feeling of sadness due to the lack of depth

This fragrance will definitely appeal to those who love different interpretations of fougère-woody notes! In my opinion, it has nothing in common with black tea. The tannic bitterness here has given way to a delicate smoky nuance. The smell of pu-erh should also be sought elsewhere. Thé Noir 29 offers a light, almost weightless aroma of cedarwood, framed by metallic aldehydes, the freshness of fig, and a pinch of sparkling frankincense accent, as well as bergamot and berry rose with honey notes. Although rose is not as important here as tobacco-berry damascones. Honey plays a key role! It adds a warm, sweet note, contrasting with the coolness of the fougère. It's like walking through a dark forest and suddenly emerging into a bright floral meadow, bathed in sunlight. The honey in Thé Noir 29 does not have an animalistic or harsh smell; it rather resembles fruity nectar. Over time, it seems that deep within the fragrance, behind the smoke and seriousness of cedar and vetiver, a rhythmic beat of a peach heart is heard. The composition does not end with an indistinct musk or modern woody amber - it smoothly transitions into a sweet floral-fruity accord, entwined with thin streams of translucent smoke. And it's truly beautiful! This may seem strange, but I think Thé Noir 29 is the younger brother of Jaisalmer Comme des Garçons. Younger, because it sounds younger, lighter, and much more elegant. It is more harmonious and lively, reflecting modern values. In its company, the world becomes light and beautiful, as if through a fashionable filter. But it does not hide or try to hide its family traits of a woody-aldehydic-incense profile. It simply doesn't know about the existence of its serious and conservative older brother!

Here, notes of bergamot, vetiver, and a hint of woody accents are mixed with a huge amount of tea. The fragrance is truly fresh and delicate, yet surprisingly long-lasting

The perfume resembles a woody fougère with a slight tartness, it has a lot of tannins, like in strong tea. But I can't break it down into notes, I don't feel that. It's not about tea, rather something deeper and sadder. There's something oppressive about it that makes you ponder )

A scent that seems to retreat into the shadows, making you pause for a moment before spraying it. At first, it might seem too sharp, even a little sour, but wait, and it unfolds on the skin. Black Tea 29 for me is exactly what I need when I want to refresh and forget about the mundane. After a tiring day, it helps me tune into something new. This fragrance has been a real discovery for me, as if it brings me back to something important and lost 🌧️

Don't rush to dismiss this fragrance if it didn't impress you at first sniff! After the sharp notes of tobacco and tea fade, a quality base unfolds, lasting on clothes for about two hours. On the skin, unfortunately, it's less prominent. I think the price is too high for such longevity. But if that doesn't scare you off, I can confidently recommend this fragrance. The base truly smells solid and expensive

What a terrible tea scent this is! I can't stand perfumes with tea, they always seem so stinky and intrusive. There are woody notes here, of course, but on the first spray, there's some fig sweetness that's just irritating. Black tea, yes, it's here, but the tobacco they promised isn't felt at all, and honestly, that's even for the better. Spices and freshness make this perfume more suitable for winter, but, damn, even when skiing it doesn't help. The snow crunches, and this scent just gets in the way of enjoying the moment

Agreed, the scent really has something of tea and tobacco. It reminds me of a quiet summer forest, but with a rather gloomy atmosphere. Amazing creatures live in this forest, but unfortunately, this impression quickly fades. The longevity, alas, leaves much to be desired ))
