Shalimar: the history of the first amber fragrance
There are fragrances that smell like perfume. And then there are those that smell like a legend. Sha...
2004: the world took its first breath of Chene Serge Lutens. This is a unisex fragrance rooted in the wood family. Its authors — perfumers Christopher Sheldrake and Serge Lutens. By character, it falls into the animals, drinks, and spicy groups. The palette of this fragrance is exceptionally rich: traces of wood can also be found — a rare combination that makes this perfume truly one of a kind. The fragrance belongs to the Gratte-Ciel collection. Available as eau de parfum.
It carries a moderate sillage, leaving a trail that lingers pleasantly in the air. 1-2 sprays sprays on skin are recommended. The longevity of this fragrance is moderate — exactly what most occasions call for. Made in France. A rich, layered composition that reveals itself differently depending on your mood and the time of day.
The fragrance has medium longevity and lasts on the skin for about 5-6 hours, gradually revealing its notes and leaving a pleasant impression
It can be felt in close proximity, but does not attract the attention of those around you
The perfume has a rich aroma that will help you stand out from the crowd and create a memorable image
A rich and elegant fragrance that gently unfolds on the skin and lasts most of the day, leaving a delicate trail
Perfumes for the fall and winter seasons often contain notes of vanilla, spices, ambergris, wood, and other warm accords, creating a feeling of comfort and warmth during the cold months
The olfactory structure of Chene unfolds as a continuous scent journey, where layers reveal themselves without rush and without gaps. The signature of Serge Lutens comes through in the pacing of the notes and the overall aesthetic. Every decision feels deliberate, and the structure feels complete all the way through. Eau de parfum sets the right density and pace of development.
At the note-group layer the composition is built around Animals, Drinks, Spicy and Wood. The palette also extends to Aromatic.
Without strict stage separation the fragrance opens as a single chord with a soft-dry woody mood: Beeswax, Birch, Caraway, Rum, Thyme, Tonka bean and oak.
The heart and base are read as a smooth transition from opening to trail, which gives the structure continuity.
The olfactory framework rests on these accords: Animalistic, Aromatic, Gourmet and Wood forming a compact and readable structure. Background accords such as Spicy and Alcoholic expand the olfactory volume in the background. The gender direction is unisex, which sharpens how the fragrance is perceived. For persistence Middle suggests confident staying power.
Overall Chene sounds complete from start to finish — the first stage creates momentum, the heart develops the core line, and the base secures the trail.

When I apply the perfume, it reveals an amazing woodiness - you can feel both moss-covered bark and fresh wood, leaves. A slightly resinous note, so rich and natural. Then cognac and spices appear. The fragrance is truly delightful, bravo to the creator!
