Identity and Release History

Imagine a fragrance born at the intersection of high fashion and niche perfumery — this is exactly it, Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle Dries Van Noten.

Released in 2013 and available until 2021, this versatile perfume is the result of a collaboration between the legendary house Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle and Belgian designer Dries Van Noten.

In Russia, it is often referred to as "Dries Van Noten," reflecting its fashionable origin and exclusive status.

The brand Frédéric Malle, founded in 2000 by an heir to a perfume dynasty, is renowned for its commitment to quality and creative freedom, and this fragrance is a vivid confirmation of that.

It does not belong to a specific collection, but perfectly embodies the spirit of collaboration, where every detail is meticulously thought out.

Positioning and Character

This perfume is created as a unisex fragrance, ideally suited for modern men and women who appreciate complex and refined compositions.

According to the classification, it belongs to the Oriental and Woody families, promising a rich and multifaceted sound.

In the format of perfume water, it offers balanced intensity, and its medium trail ensures a subtle but noticeable presence — perfect for daily wear or special occasions.

Although exact dosage recommendations are not specified, for optimal development, it is advised to apply 2-3 sprays on the skin or clothing to enjoy the smooth evolution from fresh top notes to the warm base.

The fragrance is suitable for cool seasons, evening outings, or moments when you want to add a touch of sophistication to your look.

Authors and Creative Union

Behind the creation of this masterpiece are three visionaries: Frédéric Malle as curator and brand founder, Bruno Jovanovic as the perfumer who brought the ideas to life, and Dries Van Noten, whose fashion vision gave the fragrance a unique character.

Their joint work highlights Frédéric Malle's drive for innovation and respect for the author's intent, strengthening the house's reputation as a leader in niche perfumery.

This collaboration not only enriched the brand's portfolio but also attracted the attention of art connoisseurs, demonstrating how perfumery can become a bridge between different creative worlds.

The Dries Van Noten fragrance has become a symbol of elegance and boldness, reflecting the DNA of Frédéric Malle — where every note tells a story.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

This sandalwood fragrance from Frédéric Malle, created in collaboration with Bruno Jovanovic and Dries Van Noten, is simply unbearable. The task was to create something that would reflect the style of Dries Van Noten's clothing, but honestly, it failed. Jovanovic, of course, tried to blend ethnic with eclectic, but the result was just a mess. Sandalwood with vanilla, smoke, and musk - sounds good, but in reality, it's a sweet, powdery horror that evokes nothing but disgust.

Sulfurol, which he added to change the milky nuance of sandalwood, seems like an attempt to save the situation, but in fact, it only makes it worse. This solution, of course, appealed to some, but to call it successful is just nonsense. In the end, we have a fragrance that tries to stand out but actually looks like a failed parody of something more worthy. Even the quality of Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle doesn't save this flop

The Belgian designer Dries van Noten doesn't have his own perfume line, which is quite strange. Even small brands try to capitalize on fragrances with their own name. One thinks, for example, of Bordello by Tom Rebl and perfumer Angelo Orazio Pregoni. But van Noten has something more interesting - a fragrance created in collaboration with Frédéric Malle and perfumer Bruno Jovanovic, which was released in 2013 under the name Dries van Noten. Who else can boast such a privilege? Alber Elbaz, but more on that later.

Dries van Noten - is the first fragrance in the Publisher's collection dedicated to contemporary fashion. The designer asked the young perfumer Bruno Jovanovic to create a fragrance inspired by his unique style. Van Noten's clothing is known for its contrast and ethnic motifs, as well as vibrant colors and visual comfort, despite his love for deconstructivism. To convey this style, the perfumer chose natural sandalwood as the base, emphasizing its milky and sweet notes.

Jovanovic adorned the warm and cozy sandalwood with musk, iris, and cashmeran, which added a velvety and enveloping effect. The result was a sweetish, slightly powdery woody-smoky fragrance with amber and musky nuances. But there's an interesting detail in it: the milky accent is created with sulfuryl, which is more often used in food flavorings than in perfumery. In its pure form, it smells like hot milk, but it's also used to create aromas of meat dishes. If you remove sulfuryl from Dries van Noten, you get a beautiful sandalwood composition, reminiscent of Iris Florentina by Mercurio Perfumes - a limited edition from 2017. But it's the sulf

Sandalwood with milky sweetness, woody vanilla, and saffron create a rather interesting gourmand scent, but the base with an "aftershave" nuance (bergamot, patchouli, musk) somehow doesn't fit. This fragrance, though long-lasting, leaves a strange aftertaste. It might work for winter, but overall, the feeling remains bitter 😔

This fragrance is a true oriental masterpiece, intertwining notes of lemon generously spiced with vanilla and delicate saffron, as well as jasmine petals. But on me, it unfolds strangely, reminiscent of a stale rag. On a blotter and on my mom, it smells gorgeous, but on me - not so much. Maybe when I grow up, I'll try it again, if I don't find something more suitable for myself, then maybe I'll give it another test 🤔

Some stylish, complex, and cozy scent, right? 🤨 First you smell code and suede, and then suddenly - a warm cashmere sweater. Honestly, I imagine it as models in some silly sweaters. The fragrance, of course, isn't bad, but I wouldn't say it's a 'wow'. It doesn't just evaporate, but rather, it's powerful yet not screaming, and the accord plays quite distinctly. It's the first Malle fragrance I've worn, and you know, I like it, but not enough to go crazy over it! I have better ones in my collection. The craftsmanship is, of course, high-level, but not without flaws 😒

Too much gourmand. Vanilla with sandalwood is just cloying, too intrusive. No consideration for those around you. Although, I admit, the craftsmanship is evident. Even if they offered me such a cookie, I'd easily refuse
