History and Legacy

Bois des Iles by the legendary house of Chanel is an ode to distant travels and refined femininity.

The first version was released in 1926, and in 2007, perfumer Jacques Polge breathed new life into this classic by launching it as part of the prestigious Les Exclusifs de Chanel collection.

This gesture became a bridge between eras: the original formula by Ernest Beaux acquired a contemporary sound while retaining its soul.

Positioning and Style

This is an eau de toilette for women, although its versatility also allows it to be worn by men who appreciate elegance. The fragrance belongs to the oriental and woody families.

The sillage is moderate, leaving a soft yet noticeable trail. Recommended application: 1–2 sprays on the skin and 1–2 sprays on clothing.

This is enough for the fragrance to unfold smoothly without becoming overwhelming.

Description of the composition

The fragrance pyramid of Bois des Iles Eau de Toilette is exquisitely composed. The top notes sparkle with aldehydes in a duet with bergamot, coriander, mandarin, neroli, and peach.

The heart unfolds with a floral bouquet of iris, jasmine, lilac, lily of the valley, and rose. The base is warm and enveloping: amber, benzoin, opoponax, vanilla, vetiver, and musk.

This composition evokes a warm evening on a tropical island—woody and spicy, with floral freshness and a sweet vanilla finish.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

The fragrance is real magic that penetrates the soul and body. I don't smell gingerbread, but I clearly feel honeyed aldehydes, as if they're embracing me. The iris note here is simply gorgeous, and the sweetish sandalwood, as if sprinkled with ylang-ylang, adds a special charm. The indolic nature of jasmine and delicate lilies of the valley isn't irritating; on the contrary, you want to inhale this scent again and again. The base notes with milky leather remind me of something familiar, as if Bois des Iles meets Cuir de Russie. This fragrance is alive, it seems to breathe with you, creating an atmosphere of comfort and warmth

The scent is certainly delicate and calm, but the longevity - that's just a disaster! The sillage is barely noticeable, as if it's not even there. Lily of the valley, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, and a hint of jasmine - all of it sounds beautiful, but in reality, it lacks depth. The result is a bouquet you can't get enough of, but which quickly disappears!!! Utter disappointment

Everything that once seemed beautiful to me now pales in comparison to this fragrance. Luca Turin rightly called Bois des Îles "the dark-haired brother of Chanel No. 5". Here again, irises and lilies of the valley are heard, but if in "No. 5" they break through the snow, here they bloom to the sound of spring rain. Aldehydes, which have already become legendary, are here again. Jasmine, which sounds so subtle and elegant that it's unclear where it ends and… ylang-ylang begins. The composition rises to the branches of a peach tree, swaying in the wind, to memories of summer, full of tenderness and tranquility, of love that shines like pure light. Gingerbread is promised in the base. I hope they don't appear too soon, because I want this music to play forever
