Identity and History of Tom Ford Noir de Noir

Imagine a fragrance that, since its debut in 2007, has become a benchmark of mysterious luxury.

Tom Ford Noir de Noir is a perfume from the exclusive Private Blend line, where each bottle tells a story of uncompromising aesthetics.

The name, translated as 'black from black', immediately hints at the depth and mystery characteristic of the brand's DNA: luxury without compromise, where Tom Ford's name is synonymous with bold sensuality, which saved Gucci in the '90s and breathed new life into Yves Saint Laurent.

Positioning and Wearability of the Fragrance

Noir de Noir was created as a unisex fragrance, perfectly suitable for those seeking a balance between femininity and masculinity.

It belongs to the chypre family, which gives it a complex, multifaceted character.

With a medium trail, it leaves a delicate trace, not overwhelming those around, and unfolds gradually throughout the day.

For optimal effect, it is recommended to use 1 to 2 sprays on the skin and 1 to 2 sprays on clothing, which highlights its concentration as perfume water — intense enough for the evening, yet appropriate for daytime as well.

If you are captivated by this dark elegance, pay attention to similar fragrances, such as Montale Sensual Instinct, Montale Black Aoud, and Yves Rocher Rose Oud, which also explore rich oriental and floral chords.

Creators and Influence on the World of Perfumery

The creative director and perfumer of this masterpiece was Tom Ford himself, whose unique approach to design and fragrances is reflected in every note.

Noir de Noir became an important milestone in the Private Blend collection, strengthening the brand's reputation as a pioneer in creating bold, sensual compositions.

Its influence on the industry is evident: it inspired numerous subsequent releases to experiment with dark, earthy notes, proving that luxury can be both mysterious and accessible.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

This fragrance is definitely not for everyone. On one hand, its uniqueness and character can truly grab attention, but on the other - it leaves a feeling of sadness. Why add oakmoss? Personally, I don't smell it, and it doesn't harmonize with the rest at all. The opening is rough, with notes of vanilla and rose, and then everything transitions into the smell of damp earth where rose petals have fallen and been trampled, along with saffron. This combination raises questions

Noir de Noir is, perhaps, the most ordinary fragrance in the entire collection. It simply repeats the classic theme of rose and oud, and, of course, there are many such fragrances. The differences between them boil down to nuances, ingredient quality, and the perfumer's skill. By the way, about perfumers. Tom Ford usually keeps their names hidden, but here it's different. The composition belongs to Jacques Cavallier and Harry Fremont, who are known for their work in the luxury segment. Both are masters of their craft, but Tom Ford fragrances are always created as if they were assembled by true professionals. Noir de Noir shouldn't be accused of being outdated; rather, it was a bit ahead of its time. In 2007, when it appeared, the "oud fever" was just beginning to gain popularity in the West. Yes, the oud here is clearly synthetic, but not yet the lifeless accord that would soon become the norm in niche and luxury perfumery. The combination of rose, oud, saffron, and patchouli now seems naive, but in 2007, it was different. Tom Ford's first fragrance, Black Orchid, also left its mark on Noir de Noir, adding an earthy and spicy black truffle accord. Overall, the composition can be called classic. The moderate animalic nature of oud intertwines with chocolatey patchouli, a sweet but not cloying, dark-pink rose, and leathery-medicinal saffron. For the fragrance to become a complete anthology of Middle Eastern perfumery as interpreted by French perfumers and an American creative director, it only lacks frankincense. But even without it, it's good. Honestly, Noir de Noir is a high-quality perfumery work. A deep, rich, opulent, and expensive-smelling fragrance. There's no glamour here, which Ford loved so much, but sexuality is already present. Although it is still closely tied to the oriental style. The beauty of this composition

This scent, of course, pretends to be deep, but in reality, it's just intrusive. Rose, patchouli, and chocolate - sounds beautiful, but in practice, it's somehow too dark and gothic. The vanilla powder in the base doesn't save it at all. There's a certain sadness, but not in a good way. Brightness and expensiveness? Nah, more like just a screaming fragrance that doesn't leave anyone indifferent. Autumn-winter? Yes, but only if you want everyone around you to shy away)))

Ford is just a gem! I had a whole 250 ml decanter of this playful rose. At first, I thought it would last forever. But now, it seems I just can't stop using it! 😄

This perfume really stands out from the rest. I can't recall anything else developing so long and beautifully on the skin. The scent is humid, lingering, and languid, as if it envelops you in its mystery. It feels like walking through an autumn forest, holding a bouquet of rich burgundy roses, almost black! It's simply magnificent! For me, it has become a true Tom Ford favorite! :)

I've heard many positive opinions about this fragrance, but when I tried it myself, I didn't feel anything special. It seems it's not for me. The scent is too peculiar, definitely an acquired taste, and the rose with patchouli creates a feeling of heaviness

A beautiful, rich rose unfolds in this fragrance in all its splendor. Woody notes add languor, and a light sweetness makes it simply unforgettable. This is a true masterpiece! The longevity is simply impressive, I'm thrilled with it!

Honestly, the fragrance is somewhat muddled. Roses and patchouli just jump out at you, and that spicy dryness only gets in the way. Yes, it seems expensive, but it doesn't really develop well. It lasts a long time on the skin, but that doesn't save it from the overall discomfort 😤

On my skin, this fragrance only unfolded as rose. It smells very bright and intense, simply stunning! Its longevity seems endless, it's even hard to wash off. Honestly, it's a little disappointing that I couldn't catch other notes )

This perfume is perfect for cold weather, when you're wearing a long coat and a cozy scarf. In summer, it seems completely out of place, like wearing an evening gown for a walk in the park. In the heat, this scent loses its sophistication and becomes too intrusive. Better to save it for autumn or winter, when it truly unfolds)))

Rose, yes, it's front and center here. Ferns and moss are also noticeable. The scent, you could say, is intense, even a bit heavy. You can't always wear it, you really need to get into it. This is definitely for those who appreciate bright and provocative perfumes

What a luxurious black rose scent! Honestly, I'm a bit tired of all these saffron, rose, and oud combinations, but here everything is so soft and velvety that the saffron doesn't bother me at all. It's like a black rose wrapped in chocolate, sounds very noble. The rose becomes so jammy and languid, with a slight berry aftertaste. After the oud roses from Yves Rocher and Jo Malone, this is another one that's just captivating! ))

Evening, dim light, and on the table in a vase, a luxurious dark red rose has bloomed, velvety and almost black in the twilight. This flower is at its peak beauty, just a little more and it will begin to fade, but for now its petals are still fresh. The scent of rose intertwines with the pungent smell of oud. The sillage turns out to be unobtrusive and aristocratic, perfectly suitable for going out. But, honestly, it's not quite for me, even though I love both rose and oud 😅

The rose here is so dense and vibrant that it simply can't help but attract attention. Patchouli adds a touch of tartness, and a chocolate nuance unexpectedly appears, creating an interesting effect. This is truly an evening fragrance that smells very expensive and stylish 🌹
