Description of the composition

The note pyramid of Tom Ford Ébène Fumé begins with an intriguing start, where black pepper and incense create a spicy-smoky chord, complemented by the freshness of Palo Santo and green shades of violet leaf.

In the heart of the fragrance, a rich palette unfolds: juniper (cade) and labdanum add depth, while leather chord and papyrus provide texture, and delicate rose softens the composition.

At the base, warm and persistent notes dominate: ebony wood and guaiac wood create a solid woody foundation, enhanced by resins, which ensure a long and memorable trail.

This multi-layered approach allows the fragrance to elegantly transform on the skin, from a vibrant opening to a cozy finish, making each stage of development unique and captivating.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

I can't say I like such scents. Smoke and incense aren't for me. But, out of curiosity, I decided to try it. This smell reminds me of the atmosphere of an old museum. It smells of polished floors, old books and furniture, and that special preservative used to preserve exhibits 😔

After experimenting with boozy fragrances, which undoubtedly attracted a new audience, Ford once again delights his loyal fans with the familiar style for which he is so loved. Many were displeased with those very cherry and peach notes, worrying that the brand had chosen the wrong path. Ébène Fumé is a tribute to Ford's fragrances of the early 2000s and 2010s, created not only for him but also for other luxury brands, such as Gucci pour Homme and Bois Marocain. This fragrance evokes nostalgia and reminds of harmony and mindfulness in life "here and now." It's like a reinterpretation of the past, working on mistakes. Frankincense and palo santo symbolize spirituality, while woody notes recall the past.

The composition is full of philosophy and depth, making one ponder. A complex, multi-layered structure with Ford's recognizable style. It's a bit introverted, as if drawing you inward. After a bright opening that takes you back in time, the fragrance becomes more restrained so as not to distract from contemplation. The start with incense, frankincense, pepper, and woody notes plunges you into deep thought. The notes intertwine like lianas in the tropics; it's difficult to single out anything specific, and it's not necessary. This complex polyphony, where each element adds its note to the musical picture called Ébène Fumé, creates a holistic impression. I'm thrilled, in love, and full of inspiration! Glad to see the old Ford back! 🎉

The fragrance is simply magical. I applied it and immediately felt like I was in the clouds. It reminds me of a moment from "The Master and Margarita" when Margarita, like a witch, rushes to her initiation. If she had worn any perfume at that moment, it would definitely have been this one

Honestly, the announcement of Ébène Fumé didn't impress me. Palo santo, ebony wood, juniper, and papyrus with violet sounded like something boring and too masculine, and the name only added to my indifference. But this new fragrance really surprised me!

First, I want to say - there is no ebony wood in the composition. Moreover, this accord can vary greatly among different perfumers. For example, in Grenadille d’Afrique by Aedes de Venustas, Alberto Morillas created an ebony wood note from patchouli, cashmeran, and vetiver, emphasizing the latter. In Palissandre d’Or, he used a similar approach to create a rosewood accord. Manufacturers often play on consumers' ignorance, offering something exotic and unusual to boost sales. After all, it's much more interesting to find the scent of an unknown dalbergia in a fragrance than familiar vetiver or cedar.

As for Ébène Fumé, there is no ebony wood here, and there couldn't be, because its wood doesn't have a special smell; it's only valued for its exoticism. So what does "Ebony Smoke" smell like? Oud, frankincense, nuts, and black pepper. But the main thing is oud. If you expected to read about a perfumery imitation of oud oil with its characteristic fecal and smoky nuances, then don't. This is not about an authentic oud accord that became popular from the mid-2010s and was standardized by Frédéric Malle in Desert Gems. We are talking about perfumery from the early 2010s.

The base of Ébène Fumé is Givaudan's Black Agar. It doesn't imitate natural oud but offers a more understandable and calmer woody-balsamic variation. Most likely, we owe many European ouds that appeared since the late 2000s to it. Gualtieri actively uses this

I'm not sure if this scent will suit me, but I'm curious nonetheless. The appearance and composition look promising, and the brand inspires respect. Expectations are growing: if the woody notes are moderate and not too sharp, then maybe I'd buy a small bottle

What a strange scent, to be honest. It smells like I just returned from a picnic: campfire smoke, the smell of shashlik. And by evening, it seems like something like that is coming from you. Ford? I don't know how to explain it, but it's not for me. Such a perfume solution is hard to appreciate

This fragrance definitely won't gather dust on the shelf. It will certainly appeal to those who like “heavy” perfumes. First, you feel a bright palo santo, and then it starts to mix with smoke and balm. Throughout the day, I perceive it exactly like that, and it makes me very happy. The scent is warm, long-lasting, and noble. In my opinion, it's only suitable for winter. Honestly, I can't imagine it on a girl :)
