Identity and History of Earl Grey & Cucumber

In 2011, the world of perfumery was enriched by a unique creation — Jo Malone introduced the fragrance Earl Grey & Cucumber, which quickly won the hearts of connoisseurs thanks to its unusual combination.

This eau de cologne, released as part of the Tea Collection, became a symbol of the brand's innovative approach to creating fresh and inspiring compositions.

Its name reflects two key notes — the elegant bergamot from Earl Grey tea and the refreshing cucumber, making it recognizable and desirable for collectors.

Positioning and Versatility of the Fragrance

Earl Grey & Cucumber is positioned as a unisex fragrance, ideally suited for men and women who appreciate lightness and naturalness.

With a barely perceptible trail, it creates an intimate aura without overwhelming others, making it an excellent choice for the office, dates, or daily wear.

For optimal effect, it is recommended to apply 1 to 2 sprays on the skin and 1 to 2 sprays on clothing, allowing the notes to gently unfold throughout the day.

Perfumer's Creativity and Influence on the Brand

Behind the creation of this masterpiece is the talented perfumer Christine Nagel, whose experience and insight helped bring to life the bold idea of combining tea and green chords.

Her work on Earl Grey & Cucumber strengthened Jo Malone's reputation as a brand that boldly experiments with traditional English motifs, infusing them with modern freshness.

This fragrance has become an important part of the aromatic family, demonstrating how the brand continues to expand the boundaries of perfumery art.

Description of the composition

Composition and Fragrance Development

The note pyramid of Earl Grey & Cucumber starts with a bright bergamot in the top notes, offering instant freshness and citrus playfulness, reminiscent of the first sip of Earl Grey tea.

In the heart of the composition, a cool and juicy cucumber unfolds, adding green humidity and lightness, creating a sensation of a walk through a morning garden.

The base is completed with warm and honeyed beeswax, which softens the composition, giving it longevity and a cozy aftertaste.

These notes harmoniously intertwine, reflecting groups of citrus, green, and animal chords, making the fragrance multifaceted and memorable.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. I don't smell cucumber at all. Earl Grey, yes, because of the bergamot in the name, but that's not the main thing. In fact, the fragrance is more reminiscent of citrus with honey, and fortunately, it has nothing to do with cucumbers

The bergamot is kind of watery, and that's it. The opening seems bright, but it doesn't last long. Then something fresh appears, but it's completely unclear. It smells natural, of course, but for this price, it's just a rip-off

I barely smelled tea in this fragrance, rather just a slight hint, as if I'm remembering it. And the scent itself is somewhat vague and quickly disappears, after half an hour it was gone!! Cucumber in tea - that's certainly unusual, even somewhat mocking towards English tea traditions. It's not entirely clear what Jo, our dear Malonya, wanted to convey, but with such a scent, one could even fall out of favor with the queen, and we wouldn't want that!

This series in the bottle is really appealing, but on skin or paper, it's not as impressive. On paper, by the way, I liked it, but on me, it didn't really play out. It developed somewhat vaguely, either sweet or fresh. It reminds me of when tea has cooled down and become unappetizing, kind of slippery to taste 🤔

I can't share all this excitement. This fragrance from the tea collection completely disappointed me. In the bottle, it smells like an expensive tea with a hint of bergamot, and that's truly appealing. But on the skin... it's completely different. You know that Nestea in bottles? Well, that's essentially what this scent is, just without the chemical taste. For this price, I honestly expected more

I got a tester and I just can't figure it out. The top notes definitely smell of black tea with bergamot, and that's a good thing, because lemon in perfumery has gotten pretty boring. But underneath all that, there's some floral musky base that reminds me of my mom's shower gel or the scent of regular women's hand creams. The scent isn't offensive, of course, you can wear it, and I've even heard that I smell nice, but I'm not a fan of "clean scents." I don't like smelling like shower gel, it's not my style. I'll keep it for nighttime use, but I definitely won't repurchase, not even a mini version. I'd describe it like this: a well-groomed woman after an evening bath, with a cucumber mask on her face, brewing bergamot tea and applying night cream to her hands. That's how it smells. By the way, no cucumbers were added, though I wouldn't have minded 🌸

A light citrus-herbal scent that envelops with the soft sweetness of honey. It starts with Earl Grey, then a bitter bergamot appears and a little honey, no cucumber here. This is a fragrance for everyone, it's elegant. Very quiet and intimate, creating an atmosphere of coziness 🌿

My friend also has this fragrance, it belongs to her husband. The scent is light, a little watery, with notes of buckwheat honey, which adds tartness. It's great for summertime, with almost no sillage. Perfect for the office with a white shirt or for a jog in the park 🌼

I can't say I liked it. There's freshness, but it's kind of strange, with a citrus bitterness and herbal nuances. Maybe it's cucumber, or maybe it's tea. But in the base, it gets a little warmer, but not much 🤔

Honestly, this fragrance didn't impress me at all. I tried to understand it, but nothing came of it. Bergamot seems to be there, but I don't smell any tea whatsoever. Cucumber? Well, maybe it's just responsible for the freshness and wateriness )

Hooray! I finally have them! :)) I feel incredibly happy. This fragrance is a true delight, words can't describe it! It either thrills you or repels you, but you definitely won't be indifferent. I'm just thrilled with it! That's it, I'm going on a "fragrance binge" :)

The scent is really cool, refreshing and gives a cool feeling. On the skin, it unfolds like bergamot tea, adding the watery freshness of cucumber and a little honey. The longevity is also pleasing, it lasts quite well

the scent is cold and fresh, like morning fog. it reminds you of something fleeting, with notes of greenery and water. bergamot adds a slight bitterness, creating a feeling of sadness. overall, it's a tea scent that leaves a sense of emptiness

On the skin, this fragrance unfolds amazingly, but differently each time. On a blotter, it sounds more interesting and fresh. It holds tightly to the skin. First, you feel a real Earl Grey, as if you know it, and it's hard to believe it's true. The tea quickly fades, leaving only warmth with a slight piquancy. It's versatile, suitable for any season, because on different people and at different temperatures, it manifests differently, but always unusually. I've been familiar with it for three weeks now, and I still can't get enough, I want to feel it constantly. P.S. I don't detect the sweetish cooled liquid, but it's definitely worth trying on yourself

Apple. Leaves no sillage, clings to the skin. On a blotter, it develops differently than on the body
